Great Food

When we first arrived, 15 minutes earlier than our reservation; the hostess seemed to ignore us and seated several people ahead of us. I thought she was very rude. I got the pork chop which was wonderful and my boyfriend had the chicken and we were both very happy with our selections. The noise level was too loud for a small restaurant and I didn't think the wait staff seemed very friendly. Our waitress didn't speak up over the loud background, so we never heard a word she said to us (when she decided to come to our table). The wine was over priced but very good and the salad and dessert were great as well! Although service is something extremely important with any restaurant, the food was wonderful and I enjoyed watching staff go to their gardens to pick fresh vegetables. With a more polite and attentive staff, I would have given this restaurant a perfect score but it is worth the visit!

Unfortunately, the horrible service overshadowed the otherwise good food.

The waitress seemed grumpy and unhappy. She didn't take good care of us. What's worse was that i was overcharged. I didn't see the extra $10 on my bill until i got home. If these jokers get rid of the bad management or employee(s), they should fare much better.

Good Choice In Napa But There Are Better Choices Overall

Posted by iflymaui on 9/4/2007

I live within minutes of Napa. For the last twenty years I've been dining at various Napa restaurants. Some very TOURIST oriented and some geared towards locals. Mustard's Grill on Hwy 29 in the Napa Valley (not downtown Napa) is a very good choice worth 3 or 4 stars. It's very crowded. Always. Not because of the food (although very good) but overall its level of food quality, service and its atmosphere. Expect a above-average noise level. That's one of its perks in that it is energy loaded. I still think lunch is best at Mustard's (over dinner). I like the fact that the owner (she has two other Napa restaurants... 'Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen' and 'Go Fish') has created a menu that meets almost all budgets without goughing you as some Napa restaurants can do. Sandwiches are approx; $12 and lunch entrees come in at about $19. What is in error with the restaurants menus is that a simple bottle of local wine has a 200-300% markup. That's not fair to locals or tourists and many other Napa restaurants at least provide what I'd call a entry-level wine at least. Someone in another review here said that the restaurant had a snob appeal to it and while we are blessed and very proud of not only Napa but the pure beauty of Northern California overall, I'd rate the snob appeal of Mustard's Grill as non-existant. A $10 bottle of Napa or Sonoma wine can be as elegant as a $100 bottle of Napa/Sonoma wine. Just down Highway 29 in Napa Valley you'll also find many other good choices very similar to Mustard's Grill including Rutherford's Grill (excellent and casual), Hurley's (simple and good), BRIX, next to Mustard's Grill and a bit more upscale and pricey and Bouchon's (French and worth every expensive dime you'll spend). You can't be successful in the very competitive Napa market without quality overall. Mustards's Grill meets all the requirements of being very successful.

Reservations buy nothing

After asking for a confirmation callback 48 hrs befor arrival you would think it was for a reason. Upon arrival the hostess did not bother to check when told and proceeded to sit us at a less desirable table where I would dine with a pillar next to me. When I asked to move she sat us at another table in even less desirable section. There was a nice table for two which I asked about but was ignored. Most first class restaurants would have seated us here having made and confirmed reservations. Food and other service was very good and reasonable but the hostess was rude, unresponsive and unfriendly which reflected poorly on the restaurant.
